How we got on with the A2 in 2002:
report from from Pate's Grammar School, Cheltenham

What students most like about Nuffield Chemistry A2 is the way organic chemistry builds towards everyday molecules such as medicines. The also enjoy the cress and immobilised enzyme experiments in Biochemistry.

What students have found most challenging has been:
- doing the Biochemistry theory as an individual study project
- understanding the Materials science Special Study
- the lack of information in the main students' book to assist in answering questions.

The greatest challenge for teachers has been dealing with the attitude that 'all that matters is getting a good grade'. It's difficult to avoid an exam-coaching approach rather than a broad interest in chemistry, especially when time is so limited given the days out for trips / drama / house events / Open Days.

The Halesowen CDs are very useful, especially for students who've been absent. (See the Halesowen website.)

Coursework in the A2 is much simpler now that the investigation forms a major part of it. We try to carry this out after the AS exams in July.
