Applications of chemistry

Social and economic results of advances in chemistry, and the moral and ethical implications, are frequently discussed during the course. The students' book contains both short accounts of technological applications of chemistry and extended background reading.

Towards the end of the course each student undertakes one Special Study, during which the basic principles explored earlier can be applied in new technological contexts.

The titles of the Special Studies are:

• Food science
• Biochemistry
• Mineral process chemistry
• Materials science
• Chemical engineering.

A useful distinction
Nuffield Chemistry starts with practical and theoretical chemistry and illustrates it with applications. Salters Chemistry starts with the applications (called story-lines). Both courses cover very much the same chemical ideas.
