Nuffield Advanced Chemistry

Aims

"Nuffield Chemistry helps me learn for the job which has not yet been invented."

Nuffield Advanced Chemistry aims to fulfil the needs of three groups of students:

  • those who hope to become professional chemists and will proceed to a further study of the subject in considerable depth;
  • those who need chemistry as a service subject to other science disciplines and who may or may not undertake further formal study of the subject;
  • those who will subsequently embark on a career in which the methods of science are not of prime importance.

The study of chemistry at this level should be based not only on the fundamental principles of the subject today, but should also develop imaginative thinking. The teaching approach encourages students to interpret and explain phenomena for themselves.

Students are encouraged to speculate about likely patterns of behaviour from their experience and from general chemical principles. Then they investigate them experimentally. The outcomes of practical work are discussed and used to consolidate theoretical understanding.

The aim is that students should be enabled to deal effectively with new and previously unimagined challenges.
